July 2 Community Day

As announced in a Cornell Leadership message on June 4, the university will observe a Community Day closure on Thursday, July 2. The closure recognizes the hard work and dedication of Cornell faculty and staff over the past academic year. Faculty and staff will be excused from work and are encouraged to use the day to rest and recharge.

While many university operations will pause, certain essential functions must continue to support students and visitors, maintain campus safety and security, preserve utilities and infrastructure, and sustain critical research activities. Units should identify services that must remain operational and communicate expectations and pay guidelines to affected employees well in advance. We are especially appreciative of the employees who will continue supporting critical university operations during the closure period.

Please review the Campus Closure Pay Guidelines.

Important Reminders

  • July 2 Community Day is not an official university holiday and will not automatically show as a holiday day off on employee timecards.
  • Non-exempt (hourly) staff must enter the “Unscheduled Closure – Not Worked – Paid Straight” time entry code for hours they would have worked on July 2.
  • Employees supporting essential services who work during the closure period should refer to the pay guidelines for the appropriate time entry codes.
