In our ongoing commitment to fostering a supportive and thriving work environment, we are pleased to announce updates to two key workforce policies: Policy 6.6.13: Flexibility in the Workplace and Policy 6.9: Time Off and Leaves (formerly known as Time Away From Work).

These revised policies reflect our dedication to your wellbeing, engagement, and overall satisfaction as valued members of the Cornell community. 

Here’s what you need to know:

Policy Publication

Updated policy documents are being updated in the University Policy Library on or around 4 p.m. Monday, June 24.

Flexibility in the Workplace

Policy 6.6.13: Flexibility in the Workplace

  • We recognize that flexible work arrangements are an important tool for attracting and retaining a high-performing, diverse workforce.
  • In the 2022 Employee Survey, some expressed concern about the lack of transparency in flex work request decision-making. We have now codified a set of flex work core principles and clarified expectations for unit leadership, people leaders, and staff.
  • We’ve also developed a new flex work request process which includes a common set of evaluation criteria to guide decision-making.

Time Off and Leaves

Policy 6.9: Time Off and Leaves

  • Over the next year, we’ll conduct a comprehensive review of our time off programs to align them with our commitment to excellence.
  • The first step: condensing the 150+ page policy into a concise, evergreen framework.
  • Programmatic and procedural details remain unchanged* but are now accessible separately on the Working at Cornell site.

*Beginning June 19, 2024, New York state requires that employers provide all employees with paid break time to express breast milk in the workplace. The Lactation Time section of the Time Off and Leaves program reflects this change.
