New NY State Paid Prenatal Leave

Effective January 1, 2025, in accordance with New York State Law, the university will provide eligible employees with 20 hours of paid prenatal leave per 52-week period. This time is intended to be used for prenatal healthcare service appointments during pregnancy or related to pregnancy. The full program is available on the Medical and Family Leaves policy webpage.

All employees that report into a New York-based work location are eligible for paid prenatal leave under this program, beginning from their first day of employment. There is no minimum work requirement. This leave can only be used by the employee directly receiving prenatal health care services. Spouses, partners, or support persons attending prenatal appointments with a pregnant person are not entitled to paid prenatal leave.

Employees requesting to use paid prenatal leave must coordinate with the Medical Leaves Administration, so that the 20 hours of leave can be added to their time-off plans. Once the time-off plan is updated, employees should follow unit practices for requesting time off.

Employees may use paid prenatal leave in one-hour increments, to cover all or part of a workday. Exempt employees should use the Time Off Calculation Tool in Workday to determine what an hour equates to in ‘days.’
