Frequently asked questions

What does the Employee Assembly do?

The Employee Assembly consists of 36 members representing employees and retirees across the Ithaca, Geneva and Cornell Tech campuses. We work closely with members of the administration and key university stakeholders to advocate for the interests of all staff and to seek solutions that improve the employee experience at Cornell. Through the EA, staff members have a voice in the policy-making process and more equal participation in the governance of non-academic affairs and in the life of the university.

What is the time commitment for EA members?

The Employee Assembly meets on the first and third Wednesdays of the month from 12:15-1:30 p.m., and committee meetings are generally held during the second and fourth weeks of the month. Members are asked to serve on at least one committee. You can expect to spend 1.5-2 hours per week on EA activities including meeting prep, email correspondence, communication with constituents, and participation at special events. EA representatives generally serve three-year terms unless otherwise noted. Candidates should plan to serve their full term.

How will the election work?

Interested employees must register online by 5:00PM on April 6, 2023. Should more than one candidate register for a particular seat, a vote by eligible staff will be held April 25-28, 2023. Results will be announced by close of business on May 1, 2023.All new members are required to attend the Employee Assembly meeting on  Wednesday, May 3, 2023 at 12:15 p.m.

How are retirees represented on the EA?Two voting members shall be appointed by the Division of Human Resources, in colsultation with the HR Retiree Engagement Advisory Committee, to represent the Staff Retiree constituency. The two members shall share one vote but may serve on different committees. The two-year appointments shall be staggered for continuity purposes. The Assembly shall vote to accept the proposed candidates.
