Move-In Day Message to Faculty and Staff

Dear Colleagues,

Later this month, nearly 4,000 new and returning students will arrive on campus over the course of two days for Move-In 2019, Friday, Aug. 23 and Saturday, Aug. 24. With the loss of nearly 800 parking spots on North Campus due to the North Campus Residential Expansion project, this year’s process had to be modified to address challenges not experienced in previous years. We must make significant adjustments to traffic routes and parking availability during those days, and are looking to the entire campus community to help ensure this is a positive and exciting experience for our students and their families.

Lots A, B, TRB and BTI will be used solely for staging and parking for incoming students and their families, and thus, permit holders will temporarily be displaced to other on- and off-campus locations. Affected permit holders will receive information from Transportation Services in the coming days that will further detail blackout dates for their specific parking lots and alternative parking and transportation options.

Given that Friday, Aug. 23 will be an especially busy day on campus, we are asking faculty and staff to consider alternatives that will free up parking space for new and returning students and their families, as well as our displaced permit holders.

To recognize and reward impacted permit holders, Transportation Services is hosting Revise Your Ride Day on Aug. 23, with plans to give away more than $700 in prizes to participants who:

  • Carpool
  • Take transit/shuttle service
  • Bike to work
  • Walk to work

Additionally, if your job is conducive and you receive supervisory approval, you may also consider working from a remote location to minimize congestion on these days. Please talk with your supervisor about the options available to you.

Supervisors – we ask that you consider your employees’ travel arrangements on these days, and be flexible with arrival and departure time if possible, given the parking and transportation changes.

This year’s move-in process will also require additional volunteers to help direct our students and their families. We encourage you to consider volunteering to help make this event successful. Please check with your supervisor prior to signing up to volunteer. A volunteer registration form can be found here.

We recognize that this is a new process, and we appreciate your flexibility and willingness to make this a positive experience for our new students.

Sincerely,

Ryan Lombardi
